... “New cultural geography” and regional geography. Is it possible to apply the approach of “New cultural geography” to regional geography? A critical assessment based on 30 years of Alpine research “New cultural geography”, a concept that emerged from a postmodern philosophical tradition in Germany around the year 2000, is now about to be experimentally applied to regional geography. The article examines if this attempt is possible and worthwhile. As there is currently no universally accepted concept of regional geography, this author will base his assumptions on alpine research and his resulting 30-year-long experience in order to elaborate on the central issues and conditions of regional geography. Then, the normative basics of “New cultural geography” will be defined and assessed as to their merits for regional geography. The result is ultimately a negative one. 1. The focus of “New cultural geography” is too narrow content-wise; 2. The methodical basis is too limited; 3. Contingency as a normative element is unsuitable for regional geography; 4. There is a devaluation of empirical standards. Therefore, it is not possible to apply the approach of “New cultural geography” to regional geography. Thusly, in the last part of this article, the author will develop an alternative concept of regional geography which is more appropriate to realistically analyze central problems of our modern world with, and, lastly, to produce actual recommendable solutions.
