Abstract

This map interpretation deals with a part of the Karawanken, south of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, the capital of Austria’s federal state Carinthia. Besides an overview of the socioeconomic characteristics of two municipalities, special emphasis is given to the municipality Zell/Sele in which the population predominantly speaks Slovenian. Th e article focuses on (1) geology and geomorphology, especially the Periadriatic Fault which divides the Karawanken mountains into two mountain ranges, (2) bilingualism as represented in the map and (3) two initiatives of regional development (UNESCO Geopark, Bergsteigerdörfer) which can be regarded as contributions to sustainable future development.
