Karl und Galie (Karlmeinet, Teil 1 – 1315/20)

KM1-24:   In Balduch, a village near Paris, two brothers live, Hoderich and Haenffrait: they are sons of Pippin, king of France, according to one, sons of a farmer according to another source.

KM1-45:   During three successive nights, Hoderich is visited at midnight by a dwarf who tells him to go to a bridge in Paris, where he will have a pleasant and an unpleasant experience. Hoderich follows the order after three successive visits. In Paris, Hoderich meets a money-changer who tells him that he once did not follow the dwarf’s order concerning a treasure to be raised in Balduch. He slaps Hoderich for his foolishness to believe a dwarf. Thus, Hoderich has made a bad (slap) and a good (information on treasure) experience.

KM1-168:   Back in Balduch, Hoderich and Haenffrait start searching at night and find an immense treasure in a barrel. They build a house in the place of discovery, move to Paris and become very rich as money-lenders. They take pledges (castles etc.) from nobles.

KM1-497:   David leaves court disguised as a pilgrim and travels to the princes; he tells them about Haenffrait’s and Hoderich’s plan to deprive Karl of his power, but does not mention the planned attack on his life. He begs the princes to insist on Karl’s crowning during court to be held in Paris. Prince Gerfin is sent back with him to observe the situation at court in a harper’s disguise. David attaches pilgrim’s mussels and pilgrim’s signs as proof of their pilgrimage to his clothes.

KM1-1551:   Dederich advises David, who does not believe in peace to last, to flee to the heathen King Galaffers of Spain. As Galaffers loves his daughter very much, he would rather lose everything than have her married to a man she does not love.

Galaffers is angry about his rash boon, as king Pippin did much damage to him in the past. The French kneel down and are received in his service.
