Pfannmüller, L.(ed.): Kleinere Beiträge zur Kenntnis der mittelhochdeutschen Novellendichtung II. Über das Kotzenmäre. ZfdA 54 (1913). p. 244–247

HalDB-1:   A rich lord of a castle, who is praised because of his generosity, gives to his married son all his possessions and asks him to take care of him until his death. The son has a nice chamber prepared for him and promises to honor him always. After a while he neglects him. When his wife gives birth, she has her father-in-law put into a smaller chamber, and when this is needed for the midwife, he is made to stay under the stairs, and finally made to stay in a stable far away. The old man freezes and asks his grandson to bring him the half of a horse’s blanket.

HalDB-135:   The father wants to give the old man the whole blanket, but the child insists that his father cut it in two, so he can keep the other half to give to him when he is old. The father is dismayed, criticizes the unjust behavior of his wife, and honors his father again. Epimythion: He who doesn’t want to know the blanket shall not give his possessions to his children.
