Kobold und Eisbär (ca. 1400)
von der Hagen, H.H.: Gesammtabenteuer. Hundert altdeutsche Erzählungen, 3 vols. Stuttgart/Tübingen 1850. Reprint Darmstadt 1961. Vol 3, Nr. 65, p. 261–270

KobEB-1:   Promythion: This is a hilarious story. I would laugh too, if my distress did not prevent it. The king of Norway sends a tame polar bear to the king of Denmark. The bear-leader asks a Danish peasant for accommodation. The peasant doesn’t want to grant it, because his house is haunted. The Norwegian says that, with God’s help, he can scare the ghost away.

KobEB-210:   The peasant agrees, and the bear-leader makes himself and the animal comfortable in the baking-house. During the night an imp appears and fries a piece of meat over the fire. It teases the bear until it attacks the imp and defeats it. The bear-leader comes out from the stove in the morning, where he has hidden in his fright and they leave. The peasant goes to his field, where he finds the injured imp. The imp asks him if the big cat is still alive and as the peasant answers – yes and it has had five kittens during the night – the dismayed imp promises to avoid the peasant’s house. Thus the peasant is not bothered any more.
