Der Stricker, Die drei Wünsche (>1220/50)
Fischer, H.(ed.): Der Stricker. Verserzählungen (=ATB 53). 2nd ed. Tübingen 1967. Nr.1, p. 1–11

StrDW-1:   A husband is complaining to his wife about their poverty which he claims being God’s undeserved punishment. To persuade God they pray day and night for riches until God sends an angel who shall make the man see his unwise claim. When he doesn’t retreat from his request the angel grants him three wishes.

StrDW-180:   The man informs his wife that their prayers have been heard and she asks for one wish of the three to her own bidding. She wishes the most beautiful dress which is immediately on her body. Angry about the foolish wish the husband wishes the dress into her body. When she screams the friends appear and force the man to restore her health with his last wish. The three wishes are wasted; the man is scorned, so that he dies out of shame. Epimythion: There are three kinds of fools: the first are unteachable unwise, the second deny their knowledge deliberately but the worst are those who have wisdom and act unwise. Who acts according to God’s will is wise.
