In her distress she seeks her companion’s advice and she promises to change the husband so that he loves her again if she follows her instructions. First the cunning companion goes to the husband on the field and reports that his wife is on the deathbed. The peasant is pleased and begs the companion to bring his wife into the grave as fast as possible. He doesn’t want to go home before she is dead. The companion has buried a tree trunk and takes the wife into her house. The peasant has to promise her to take her advice if he marries again.

After five weeks of being by himself he seeks the companion’s advice who promises to introduce him to a fine woman within a short time. Meanwhile she pampers the peasant’s wife and clothes her preciously. Therefore the suitor not only doesn’t recognize her but also falls heavily in love with her and proposes marriage. When his impatience reaches its peak his wife reveals her identity. Although they want to keep it secret the story becomes well known all over the country and the peasant is mocked all his life. But they live together in peace. Epimythion: One shouldn’t try but even nowadays such men are to be found who are easily conned.
