Maere and Novellas

Werner der Gärtner, Meier Helmbrecht (1280/90)
Panzer, F.(ed.): Helmbrecht von Wernher dem Gartenaere (=ATB 11). Tübingen 1965.

WdGMH-1:   The peasant’s son Helmbrecht has his mother and sister gear him up like a nobleman because he wants to become a knight especially with an embroidered cap. From the hair at the back over the crown of his head to the lock in the middle of the forehead there is a border covered with birds that looked just as if they had flown there form the Spessart region. By the right ear there is the story of how Troy was besieged after bold Paris had stolen the Greek king’s wife. On the left appear the mighty deeds performed by the comrades in arms Charlemagne, Roland Turpin and Oliver in battle against the heathens. From one ribbon to the other between his ears is the story of how lady Helche’s sons and Diether of Verona were slain long ago by the fierce berserker Wittig in the battle of Ravenna. On the front border is a dance scene such as one likes to see embroidered in silk with knights and ladies. On each side a knight holds the hands of two ladies and on the other a youth dances between two maidens. Fiddlers are close by. The cap was sewn by a merry nun who had run away from her cell because she thought herself too pretty for a cloister.
