Herzog Ernst A, Marburger Bruchstücke
Sowinski, B. (ed.): Herzog Ernst. Stuttgart 1979, p.355-357.

HerEAm-1:   1a Duke Ernst takes the flag with his own hands and leads his men against the people of Grippia. A furious battle begins. The Grippians have a mighty army and many casualties are to bemoan.

HerEAm-2:   1b The knights are unable to get at the enemy with their swords and can only try to protect themselves with their shields. Since they avoid close contact they never bring their fast horses near enough for them to be seized. The duke carries his banner with great effort right through the huge army.

HerEAm-3:   2ab Duke Ernst and his men find many hides of “sea-cattle” on the (stranded) ships and carry them to their own vessel. They take a big hide and cut stripes out of it. Then they decide to sew each other into hides to be carried off by the griffins and that the duke and the count should be the first to fly. Each is sewn up into a skin. The duke tells his men that they will take the opportunity: either they survive or they die.
